Six runners, five winners! Velvet Vista ends week to remember for Mike Murphy
The final week of January was one to remember for Mike Murphy as Velvet Vista provided the trainer with a fifth consecutive winner in seven days.
Velvet Vista bookended the week by winning for the first time at Chelmsford on Monday before striking again by a length and three quarters under Rossa Ryan in division two of the 7f handicap.
Three of the Murphy-trained winners were successful for the first time, proving extra special for the Richard Marriott-owned Velvet Vista, the Phil Banfield-owned Aria Rose and Dusty Damsel, owned by the Calm Partnership consisting of Stephen Adams, Nigel Cobby and Bob Laws.
Owhatanight just failed to extend the stable’s winning run to six when a staying-on second to the Roy Bowring-trained Dylan’s Lad in the 6f classified stakes.
The Bedfordshire-based Murphy said: “The six-timer didn't quite go in but we've had the rub of the green and it's been a brilliant week.
"We've had an across-the-card double and a 1-2 in the London Mile, but not a run like this! It's been great for the yard and notably the owners as three of our winners were maiden winners."
Velvet Vista holds entries at Chelmsford on Thursday, while Lingfield jumpers' bumper debutant Spacesuit and Southwell specialist Mulzim bid to continue the good run earlier this week.
Murphy added: "Mulzim loves Southwell, won nicely there last week and should continue to run well as he may have a little bit in hand, while Spacesuit is a big, lovely horse who we've taken our time with – he will benefit for the experience."
Great month
Mark Loughnane similarly features on the hot trainers’ list and enjoyed an eighth winner from 43 all-weather runners in January when Universal Effect narrowly defeated stablemate Never Said Nothing in the 1m½f handicap.
