Mark Johnston reveals Subjectivist injury after Sir Ron Priestley win
Mark Johnston got a small measure of compensation for the "devastating" injury suffered by Gold Cup winner Subjectivist when he landed a sixth Princess Of Wales's Tattersalls Stakes with his three-parts brother Sir Ron Priestley.
The five-year-old made all under Franny Norton to take the Newmarket Group 2 by a neck in a contest the trainer first took with Fruits Of Love back in 1998.
Subjectivist will be out until at least Royal Ascot next year and his trainer said: "He had filling in his right foreleg at the start of the week. We left him in the Goodwood Cup in the hope it would come to nothing. But it's not proved to be the case and you certainly won't be seeing him again this year.
"He's a potential stallion and we'll have to look at what's the best future for him, it's not impossible he'll be back for the Gold Cup next year but it's highly unlikely he'll be back before then. It's devastating because he's the most exciting horse I've had for some time."
The 1-2 favourite Al Aasy pressed him hard in the final furlong and hit a low of 1.31 in running on Betfair, but he had no answers to the winner's battling attitude and had to settle for second.
Assistant trainer Charlie Johnston said: "We feel that this fast ground is the key to him as the only times he has disappointed was at Ascot this year and last when it was soft.
"That performance reminded me of Communique, who won this two years ago having won the Jockey Club Stakes and then ran in the Hardwicke before coming here. On this ground he's tough to pass and I thought we'd be in business if we got in a fight with the favourite."
He added: "I said to Dad earlier in the week that we'd have to win this as it's £5,000 to leave him in the King George and we needed to cover costs. His main target is the Irish St Leger, but he'll have a run before then and we could supplement him for Goodwood."
Princess Of Wales's Stakes result and replay
The winner earned a quote of 14-1 (from 20) for the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes from Paddy Power, who also offer 9-2 about the winner for the Goodwood Cup.
Of the runner-up Al Aasy, Richard Hills, assistant racing manager to owners Shadwell Estates, said: "We were a bit disappointed as he was getting three pounds off the winner and I doubt he'll be going for the King George after that.
"We'll regroup and hopefully he can bounce back in the autumn when there is some give in the ground."
