Silken Petals handed Listed target after denying Royal Ascot fifth

Fortune favours the brave and trainer Charlie McBride was duly rewarded for his decision to run Silken Petals in the 5f fillies' novice.

The two-year-old gave 3lb to Queen Mary Stakes fifth Vertiginous but her professionalism proved decisive as she battled under Hayley Turner, who had a double on the card, to beat the odds-on favourite.

"Maybe we should have gone for the Queen Mary?" joked McBride, who trained the winner's sister, Squash, a Group-class filly. "It was a good effort to give weight away to Vertiginous and she'll probably go for the Listed St Hugh's Stakes at Newbury this month.

"We were going to wait for that race after her last run but decided to take our chance with the Great British Bonus here. The others all looked a bit green but she was professional and battled really well."

It was a winning return to Kempton for Silken Petals, who finished a length behind Newmarket Group 2 winner Sandrine on her debut, with Oscula, who landed the Woodcote Stakes, finishing in third.

Her first five starts came over six furlongs but she was dropped down to the minimum trip last time and won impressively at York.

Speak silences rivals

Debutante Speak led home a one-two for Classic-winning owner George Strawbridge when beating Natasha in the fillies' maiden.

The daughter of Sea The Moon finished a length and three-quarters clear in the mile contest, won in 2019 by Miss Yoda, who landed the Henkel-Preis der Diana – or German Oaks – for John Gosden.

"This was the first mile maiden we could go for and they've run good races," said James Wigan, racing manager to Strawbridge. "Both jockeys were really pleased and they can go for something better. We'll stick to running over a mile with the winner for the time being."

Strawbridge landed the King George Qatar Stakes on Friday with Suesa, and Wigan added: "She's enjoying a holiday by the seaside in Deauville. York has to be quite high on the agenda but we'll wait to see how she is. The Abbaye will be her main target in October."

Speak struck for Andrew Balding and David Probert, who continued their excellent run of form when Goolwa won the 1m4f fillies' handicap.

Fast start

Fast Attack lived up to her name with a blistering turn of foot to score on her debut in the 7f fillies' novice under James Doyle.

The two-year-old, who cost 210,000gns as a yearling, bounded six lengths clear of Ebtsama to win for trainers Simon and Ed Crisford.

"She's worked well with horses who have come out and won so we were quite hopeful. It was her first day at school but she handled it well," said Doyle. "She's striking and certainly catches the eye.

"She was a little bit lost to begin with but when she got balanced she powered away nicely and ran all the way through the line. The dam side is quite speedy so she's probably fine over this trip for now."
