'She's riding well and works hard' - trainer hails jockey Laura Coughlan
Monday: Wolverhampton
Trainer Stan Moore has a reputation for launching the careers of apprentice jockeys and looks to have unearthed another star in Laura Coughlan.
The 5lb claimer rode 16-5 favourite Vaxholm to land the 1m½f nursery by a length from Melos, a quickfire double for the juvenile who won at Kempton on his last start.
“He’s in the form of his life, he’s such a happy little horse,” she told Sky Sports Racing.
“It didn’t really unfold how I wanted it to. I was stuck on the rail and had to go to plan B – but that’s racing.”
The jockey, who enjoyed a third win from her last five rides, added: “That’s my 28th winner; hopefully things will continue to go well through the winter. My jockey coach George Baker has helped me massively and Stan Moore has been a huge supporter of mine.”
Winning trainer Moore, who also supported Josephine Gordon as she rose through the ranks, said: “You couldn’t complain about the ride Laura gave that horse, it was very good. She’s riding well and she works hard, she’s always in the gym.
“She doesn’t get the opportunities she deserves. It’s a tough game at the minute for everybody, jockeys, trainers and owners.”
State surprise
The Joseph Tuite trained-Michigan State caused a shockon his debut when landing the 1m1½f maiden at odds of 28-1 under David Probert. The 6-5 favourite Resumption had to settle for second for trainer William Haggas.
