'She's gorgeous and clearly has a lot of class' - echoes of Zarkava as granddaughter Zarigana impresses
Those who saw her debut at Chantilly in July would have been hoping for something special from Zarigana in the Prix d'Aumale and the Aga Khan's granddaughter of the matchless Zarkava more than lived up to her billing, sweeping past the unbeaten Prix Six Perfections winner Angeal to score by an easy three lengths under Mickael Barzalona.
All being well she will now head back to Longchamp on Arc day to attempt to win the Marcel Boussac, the first of five career Group 1s collected by Zarkava, who the Aga Khan described as the apogee of his career as a breeder.
"We never ask everything of them in the mornings and she wouldn't be a particularly showy worker but I loved what I saw there," said trainer Francis Graffard. "She's a gorgeous filly who clearly has an enormous amount of class. She moved really well and when he took her to the outside she just went away in a flash. She is very classy."
Coral introduced Zarigana at 10-1 for the 1,000 Guineas (from 20-1) and the same price for the Oaks, and it was impossible not to be impressed with the way the daughter of Siyouni casually disposed of well-regarded rivals.
"I try not to get too carried away with what I see on the gallops and prefer to see them confirm it on the track," said Graffard. "We decided to give her another run and we won't know if there's even more to come until she's really put under pressure but she is beautiful and very good with it.
"We'll discuss it among the team but, assuming she comes out of this well, now we know she handles softer ground, I think she'll take her chance in the Boussac."
Earlier Mario Baratti sent out Misunderstood to maintain his unbeaten record in the Group 3 Prix des Chenes, in which the son of Hello Youmzain defeated Nesthorn by four and a half lengths.
