It was Joseph O'Brien's day and a 354-1 treble for the stable was highlighted by the extraordinary victory of 40-1 shot Without Words in the feature Coolmore-sponsored Fairy Bridge Stakes.

The Group 3 looked like being a one-horse contest as Matilda Picotte led and opened up an considerable advantage, but from a furlong out the winner started to pick up under Mikey Sheehy and sustained her effort to terrific effect to get up close home to win by a length.

The dominance of the runner-up for all bar the dying strides was shown by the rest of the field being almost three lengths further back.

"She ran well at Killarney the other day," said O'Brien's assistant Sean Corby. "Dylan Browne McMonagle felt that she would be better suited by having a good gallop to aim at and she had that here.

"She can be keen but she settled lovely today with the pace that was on and she picked up well. She's a talented filly when things fall right for her and I'd imagine she'll run again soon. She's fairly versatile with regards to ground."

McDonogh on the double

The first two legs of the stable double came in the opening two juvenile maidens, with Declan McDonogh on both winners.

The once-raced Tennessee Stud made all of the running to land the opening 1m1f maiden, lowering the colours of the Ballydoyle 4-9 favourite Shackleton by two and a quarter lengths.

"He sharpened up a lot and did well," said McDonogh. "He's a lovely staying horse and a Derby trial horse for next year. He showed a good attitude down the straight out on his own, which is never easy."

The rider then won on 4-9 favourite Dignam for owner Paul Byrne in the maiden which followed.

The former champion jockey took the opportunity to express his criticism of the state of the track. He said: "It's riding bad. It's rough and it rails terribly. There are corners all the way down the back and you can't get around the rail as it keeps throwing you off."

McDonogh later joined a delegation of riders who made similar complaints to the stewards, although they did accept that the track was not in a dangerous condition and racing continued.

Quality breaks through

The addition of blinkers did the trick for the Jack Davison-trained She's Quality, who blitzed her rivals to record a breakthrough success in the Listed Abergwaun Stakes.

She showed tremendous speed and the race was soon over as her rivals failed to make significant inroads. Her three-length margin of victory over Jakajaro and Ano Syra did full justice to her superiority.

"She has a lot of speed," said winning rider Billy Lee. "She broke okay and I ended up in front a bit soon, but I wasn't going to break her stride in the first-time blinkers. I wanted to let her go nice and even.

"She put them to the sword today on a fast track. Hopefully she can step up again. Jack mentioned the Flying Five so hopefully that's her next destination."
