Mitchell Bastyan the beneficiary as chance ride leads to winner
Conditional Mitchell Bastyan found himself a surprising winner of the bumper, following a dramatic last-minute jockey change.
Bastyan had originally been scheduled to ride the Milton-Harris trained Aussie Moon, but she was declared a non-runner after the yard brought the wrong horse to the track.
As a result, the jockey was left without a ride on the card, with only three runners due to contest the bumper.
However, on the way to post, favourite Kubinski unseated Bryan Carver, prompting medical services to attend to the jockey on course.
As racing was delayed, the four-year-old was declared fit to run and taken back to be resaddled, and Bastyan was offered the unexpected mount after remaining at the track.
Under different silks and a new jockey, Kubinski made it to the start after a 15-minute delay, and won by an impressive five lengths.
The chance success gave Bastyan his first winner this season in his first ride for trainer Chris Honour.
Carver was taken to hospital by ambulance for further assessment.
Scrappy Jack lands gamble to give 'speechless' Jay Tidball his first winner
Scrappy Jack lived up to his name when gaining a gutsy surprise success in the juvenile hurdle and provide jockey Jay Tidball with his first winner under rules.
He opened at 40-1, but punters backed the Bill Turner-trained runner into 22-1 and the three-year-old rewarded his supporters.
The 20-year-old Tidball told Sky Sports Racing: "I'm speechless, I can't believe it's come. The horse has been great at the yard, I broke him in as a two-year-old.
"He was always a bit too slow for the Flat but he got the job done today.
"He's a gutsy little horse and I'm over the moon. Mr Turner has been fantastic to me and if it wasn’t for him I wouldn't be here today."
Hitch makes her mark
Point-to-point trainer Claire Hitch recorded her second winner under rules this season when Every Breakin Wave and Ben Godfrey came out on top in the maiden hurdle.
Godfrey was also aboard Hitch's other winner this term, Holerday Ridge, who obliged at Newton Abbot three weeks ago.
Double for Nicholls
Paul Nicholls had four runners on the card and left with a double to maintain his fine summer form.
1-2 favourite Chez Hans made it two wins on the bounce at Newton Abbot in the 2m1f handicap hurdle under Ben Bromley, before Harry Cobden sealed the double on Stanley Stanley in division one of the 2m5½f handicap hurdle.
