Saudi Cup next for brilliant Bangkok after Winter Derby Trial win
Bangkok was handed an opening quote of 50-1 for this month's Saudi Cup by Paddy Power after landing the Listed Betway Winter Derby Trial for the second year running.
Backed into 8-13 (from 11-10 in the morning), Andrew Balding's class act struck late under a cool ride from Ryan Moore to see off old rivals Felix and Forest Of Dean.
Unlike on his previous start where he made the running and was just touched off by Felix, Bangkok was settled off a gentle pace set by Vintager before kicking for home turning in where he was always holding the eventual runner-up.
Rather than have another crack at the Winter Derby back at the track in three weeks, for which he is 2-1 favourite (from 11-4) with Paddy Power, Bangkok is instead to jet out to Riyadh next weekend to take up a much more lucrative engagement.
Balding said: "Bangkok is a class horse and did that very well under a great ride from Ryan. He's received an invitation for the Saudi Cup on February 20 and the plan is to fly him out there.
"He's never run on dirt so we'll have to see how he handles it but he enjoys the all-weather and is pretty versatile."
Angel denies Kachy's owner a dream win
The first running of the Listed Kachy Stakes went the way of Exalted Angel, who burst from the stalls much like the late Tom Dascombe-trained sprinter before battling home under Clifford Lee.
The neck success – and a third win in what formerly was known as the Cleves Stakes for trainer Karl Burke – was heartbreaking for Kachy's owner Dave Lowe who was represented by gallant runner-up Fizzy Feet.
A 20-1 chance, Exalted Angel had been running over five furlongs but enjoyed the extra distance when getting up in the last strides to shade Fizzy Feet with the Dascombe-trained favourite Misty Grey coming late into third.
Lee said: "Exalted Angel usually misses the break but was good today and that was a good performance coming from the widest draw of all in stall nine. Thanks to the boss and the owners for putting me up."
