Saffron Beach puts on the style to leave Chapple-Hyam eyeing Canadian riches

There was a twinkle in Jane Chapple-Hyam's eye after stable star Saffron Beach put a couple of below-par efforts behind her with a commanding success in the Group 3 Atalanta Stakes, to set up a possible trip to Canada.

Chapple-Hyam has shown unwavering belief in Saffron Beach since her debut success last September and saddled the daughter of New Bay to finish second in the 1,000 Guineas this season.

However, she failed to stay when upped to a mile and a half in the Oaks and was below her best when beating just two home in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes last month.

Dropped in class and partnered with Hollie Doyle for the first time on this occasion, Saffron Beach showed all her old sparkle under a positive ride, hitting the front over two furlongs out and going further clear as the line approached.

"We had our hiccup in the Oaks and a hiccup in the Falmouth but she's come back here as the filly we know she is," said a delighted Chapple-Hyam.

"I had to drop her back to a Group 3 today to get her confidence back as much as anything. Hollie said she had a lot of horse underneath her."

An immediate return to the highest level looks likely for Saffron Beach, with the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on October 2 and the EP Taylor Stakes at Woodbine on October 17 in the mix.

Chapple-Hyam added: "She's in the Sun Chariot but would one have a little go at the EP Taylor? You know me, I love to travel but I'll leave it to the owners to decide."

Doyle was seen at her strongest as she completed an 18-1 double aboard the Hughie Morrison-trained King Of Clubs in the 1m2f handicap.

Morrison may have missed out on the Ebor at York by just a head with Quickthorn but his luck was in here as Doyle mustered a late thrust on King Of Clubs to prevail by a nose from Victory Chime.

Murphy's law

Oisin Murphy's decision to skip the last day of York's Ebor festival was rewarded as he maintained his healthy lead in the jockeys' championship courtesy of a near 10-1 double.

Successful aboard Devil's Angel in the 5f handicap and Silent Escape in the 7f handicap, Murphy leads closest rival William Buick by 19 winners with less than two months of the season remaining.

Godolphin's Silent Escape was particularly impressive as she came home three and a half lengths clear of runner-up Ibiza Rocks and Murphy said: "She's a big, strong filly who will continue to improve. Saeed bin Suroor's horses are flying and I hope she can perform at Listed level."

Hundred up for Haggas

William Haggas, who has been rattling the proverbial woodwork with his runners at York this week, saddled his 100th winner of the year in Britain when Hamaki carried the colours of Simon Munir and Isaac Souede to victory in the 7f handicap.
