Ralph Beckett's battalion of juveniles gains two more members as Smoken completes stable double
Ralph Beckett's battalion of juveniles strengthened as Smoken's gallant victory in the Listed Montrose Stakes completed a double for the yard.
Beckett, who within the last fortnight has sent out promising types I Am I Said, Centigrade, Square D'Alboni, That's Amore and Belgrave, first landed division one of the 7f fillies' novice with the Doreen Tabor-owned Bright Times Ahead.
The adage rang true as five races later Smoken held off Secret Of Love by a length to justify 5-6 favouritism and make it two wins from as many starts. The filly is from the family of Soviet Song and Marsha and looks to have a bright future.
Hector Crouch rode both fillies and completed a treble in the concluding 7f handicap in Pressure's On.
Morland mistake
A trainer due to saddle his first runner left the course without having done so after the wrong horse was presented for identification.
Jack Morland, who trains at Exeter House Stables in Newmarket, was due to be represented by Momaer in the 6f handicap, but a representative for his stable presented a different horse to be identified upon arrival at the racecourse.
The stewards subsequently moved to declare the correct horse a non-runner and the race was won by Music Society for Cam Hardie and Tim Easterby.
Morland said: "It was a clerical error on my behalf and I take full responsibility. I apologise to the owners and all those who it has affected."
