Personal milestones for Karen and Gemma Tutty as they team up for Redcar double
Karen and Gemma Tutty combined for a double with Sweet Madness and Freak Out on what proved to be a landmark afternoon for the mother-and-daughter team.
Karen Tutty, based at Northallerton in North Yorkshire, equalled her best yearly total from 2018 of 14 winners on the Flat following the two victories, while her daughter and stable jockey reached double figures for first time to take her tally for 2021 to ten winners.
The trainer was on holiday in Menorca and watched the action on her mobile phone as Sweet Madness won the mile nursery before Freak Out took the 1m2f handicap. Both horses carried the colours of Thoroughbred Homes.
"It's been a very good afternoon," she said. "I'm really delighted about the two-year-old winner [Sweet Madness] as she's got a future. She's a big filly – a proper backend type – and is really tough and genuine."
Karen Tutty put this year's success down to an investment in youth paying off and also paid tribute to her daughter's fitness in the saddle.
"Gemma's running the London Marathon in a couple of weeks and after all the training she's done, you can't say she's not fit riding in her races," she added.
Out From Under denied again
Roger Charlton was left wondering how on earth Out From Under was still a maiden after the Dubawi colt was denied victory on the line by Vintage Choice.
Out From Under was first past the post at Ffos Las last month only to lose the race in the stewards' room after bumping into the runner-up and appeared on course to belatedly get off the mark in the 7f maiden.
The 6-4 shot appeared to have the measure of 4-5 favourite Vintage Choice but jockey Cieren Fallon got one last effort out his mount to get up by a nose.
Vintage Choice was winning for owner Isa Salman Al Khalifa, successful in last Saturday's Mill Reef Stakes with Wings Of War.
