Once a sprinter, now a stayer - step up in trip no issue for Butler's Power On
Power On took a sizable step up in trip in his stride as he ran out a narrow winner of the 1m2f handicap for trainer John Butler.
Over his 16 previous starts the three-year-old had only once run beyond seven furlongs, but he rubbished any suggestion that he would not have the requisite stamina for this test as he held off Bookmark by a neck.
Winning jockey John Egan said: "He's up a lot in trip, but he's settled down now as he was a little bit keen when sprinting in his younger days. Getting horses to stitch off like he did there is essential to them being able to get their optimum trip."
The legendary Bobby Davro was on hand to present a picture of himself to the connections of Power On after the race.
Wadacre upsets favourite
Odds-on shot Thunder Flash slipped on a proverbial banana skin when coming out second best to the impressive Wadacre Gogo in the 1m2f classified stakes.
The winner made nearly all the running and pulled away from the Ian Williams-trained 4-5 favourite inside the final furlong for victory by two and three-quarter lengths.
One-two for Oppenheimer
Purple Ribbon was a convincing winner of the mile fillies' maiden, a race run to advertise an upcoming concert at Chelmsford from Australian crooner and I'm A Celebrity finalist Peter Andre.
Both the Charlie Fellowes-trained winner and runner-up At A Pinch carried the colours of Anthony Oppenheimer.
