'It worked out perfectly' - Aidan O'Brien delighted by Mother Earth's victory
Saturday: Curragh
Mother Earth got her 2022 campaign off to a winning start by producing a workmanlike success in the Group 3 Lodge Park Stud Irish EBF Park Express Stakes.
Ridden by Ryan Moore, last year's Qipco 1,000 Guineas and Prix Rothschild winner was put to the pin of her collar to get to the front-running five-year-old Insinuendo inside the final furlong, and then had to dig deep to hold the rallying runner-up by three-quarters of a length, with Freedom Of Speech a further length and three quarters away.
Paddy Power reacted by shortening her to 8-1 (from 14s) for the Queen Anne Stakes.
Trainer Aidan O'Brien said: "We were delighted with that. It was a very nice race to start her off in and it worked out perfectly.
"They went very steady and Ryan had to move early on her, but she quickened well and that was perfect for her after we gave her a nice break. She will probably go to something like the Lockinge now."
McGuinness Laugh-ing
Hot on the heels of A Case Of You winning the Al Quoz at Meydan, Ado McGuinness won with another of his sprinters when the Shamrock Thoroughbreds-owned Laugh A Minute landed the 5f handicap, getting champion jockey Colin Keane off the mark for the season.
The Mayson gelding seems to find his best form at opposite ends of the season, and picked up well from off the pace to win by a length and a half from bottomweight Swift Flight.
McGuinness' assistant trainer Stephen Thorne said: "Words can't describe what the last few minutes mean to the yard. It's probably 20 minutes we won't experience for the rest of our lives, and Ado deserves so much credit.
"He has worked hard, and so has everyone in the yard, to prep us for this day. Everything has gone very well all week.
"This horse was well weighted to win a handicap after what he did at York in the autumn. He needs plenty of cover and to be produced late. Colin gave him a great ride. We'll look at a stakes race next or maybe a handicap."
