He was a handicapper stepping up to Group 3 class, dropping back to a trip he'd never won over and unproven on the all-weather – apart from that everything was in his favour.

But you don't train for as long as David Barron has without learning when to take a chance – as Above The Rest proved with a clear-cut victory in the Betfred TV Chipchase Stakes.

The seven-year-old may be a handicapper but he's a decidedly smart one, winner of the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket last year and successful off an official mark of 104 at York a fortnight ago.
