New target required for Alice Haynes as she surpasses aim in first season
Newmarket trainer Alice Haynes has readjusted her goal for the year after Hollow Steel’s victory in the 7f fillies’ nursery saw her notch a tenth winner since taking out her licence.
Haynes, who saddled her first runner in February, said: “If someone had said I’d have this many winners by the beginning of August I wouldn’t have believed them. We’ve now pushed the goal to 15 by the end of the year.”
Hollow Steel followed up her previous success at Ripon last month and could reappear quickly in search of a hat-trick at Beverley on Thursday.
Haynes added: “We knew from her work that she’d improved from that first win, so thank God she got her head in front for the confidence. The handicapper shouldn’t really punish her too much.”
More juvenile joy
George Boughey’s terrific season shows no signs of stopping, and Zebelle became his 18th two-year-old winner of the year when landing the 5f novice.
Zebelle, who was bought by Sheikh Abdullah Almalek Alsabah after making a winning debut for Amy Murphy at Ripon in June, is set to take in the Listed St Hugh’s Stakes over five furlongs at Newbury next after getting the better of the Kevin Ryan-trained Guest List by a neck on her first start for Boughey.
The trainer said: “It was a good spot for her to win under a penalty and I think she will improve when she goes over six or seven furlongs in time.
“Newbury may be a little sharp for her, but it’s all about getting black type for these fillies.”
