'My parents told me to get a job, so I did!' - showjumper enjoys first winner
Tuesday: Southwell
Isabelle Ryder partnered her first winner on just her tenth Flat ride when Alioski held off the late challenge of Master Grey to win the 1m4f amateur jockeys' handicap by a head.
The winning feeling is familiar to Ryder, 20, who competed for the Great Britain junior team in showjumping, and hopes to have a future as a jump jockey.
She said: "I started riding out a couple of years ago because I knew I wanted to be involved in horses and not go to university. My parents told me to get a job, so I did!
"I was enjoying it so much and Gary [Brown, trainer] thought it would be a good idea to get my amateur licence. I think the showjumping background gives me a starter – I did that to a high level, so I'd like to get there over jumps."
The versatile Alioski could be a useful partner in that sphere given he won a maiden hurdle at Worcester in June.
Shorties galore
Four of the nine races featured favourites priced at even-money or shorter, but only two obliged.
Aztec Empire (1-2) and Infinitive (evens) were beaten in the 1m4f maiden and 1m3f novice respectively, but 1-16 shot Light Of Peace ran out a decisive winner of 7f fillies' maiden, the Godolphin filly showing her class when scoring by six and a half lengths.
Funky Town Pinkie, the 1-6 favourite, was the other short-priced winner. The Ivan Furtado-trained filly claimed the 2m½f handicap by eight lengths under Joey Haynes.
