'My owner won't be impressed' - Twomey to appeal against Rosscarbery DQ
A bemused and annoyed Paddy Twomey will be appealing against the disqualification of Rosscarbery, who justified her €30,000 supplementary fee by finishing third to stablemate La Petite Coco in the Group 1 Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly Stakes but was thrown out after Wayne Lordan weighed in 5lb light.
Twomey is convinced a technical glitch with the scales was to blame for the incident, which took the shine off the first Group 1 victory of his career.
Niall Cronin, communications manager for the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board, said: "Wayne Lordan weighed out at 138.1lb and weighed back in at 133.5lb. As a result there was an inquiry into the weighing-in procedures of the third-placed horse. As per rule 231, section 1, the horse had to be disqualified. The stewards have referred the matter on for further investigation. Mr Twomey is aware of that."
Twomey gave his side of the story and revealed what happened before the race.
He said: "I was getting the two saddles. Billy [Lee, La Petite Coco's rider] weighed out first and he weighed out fine. He gave me the saddle. Wayne was inside and he got on the scales and the clerk of the scales told him he was 5lb too heavy.
"He made him take down the saddle and take out the weights and then get back on the scales. So he did, and then the clerk cleared him and weighed him out with the correct weight and sent him out to race."
He continued: "When he came back the clerk told him he was 5lb light. I had taken the saddle from the weighing room to the filly and put it on and I was under pressure for time as I had two runners. They took a lot of time messing around, putting in weight and taking out weight, but he weighed out and was given the okay by the clerk.
"The same saddle that went out came back in and I guess we'll have to appeal it. It's a glitch with the clerk of the scales, it's an issue with the IHRB and I'd say my owner [Robert Moran] won't be impressed."
Following Rosscarbery's disqualification, 40-1 shot Thunder Kiss was moved up a place to third.
