Mark Crehan banned for 28 days after mistaking winning post on Aerion Power
Apprentice jockey Mark Crehan was banned for 28 days after throwing away victory on Aerion Power by mistaking the winning post in the 1m2f handicap.
Crehan was in command on the King Power Racing colt half a furlong out before he eased right down in a costly aberration which handed the race to Colony Queen.
The jockey seemed to realise the error he had made approaching the line and frantically started riding again on the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Aerion Power, who responded to grab second from Spanish Archer.
The stewards held an inquiry and discovered Crehan had mistaken the half-furlong marker for the winning post and as such had stopped riding prematurely on the 9-4 shot.
Crehan was found guilty of "failing to ride out on a horse that would have finished first" and was suspended for the period July 31 to August 27.
The fortunate success provided Colony Queen with her third straight victory since joining trainer John Mackie.
Winning jockey Connor Beasley told Sky Sports Racing: "It was a bit of a tactical race. She won at Carlisle the other day and today she travelled lovely and was doing her best work the further we went. It's great for the owners and the John Mackie team."
The emergence of Crehan, who with 17 winners trails only Marco Ghiani in the apprentice title race, has been one of the stories of the season.
The 23-year-old rode just one winner last year but has struck up a prolific partnership with trainer George Boughey, for whom he partnered Oscula to victory in the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom on Oaks day.
