Man of the moment Freddie Gingell rides first treble of his career for boss Paul Nicholls
A couple of days on from winning the Paddy Power Gold Cup, Freddie Gingell notched another landmark achievement when riding a first career treble.
Gingell, who landed Cheltenham’s biggest handicap outside of the festival on Il Ridoto for boss Paul Nicholls on Saturday, combined with the same trainer for a trio of successful favourites.
The 18-year-old helped Florencethemachine, whose first victory under rules came at this track in January, get off the mark over fences at the second attempt in the 3m limited novice handicap chase.
Kick Up A Storm backed up last month’s Wincanton win in the following 2m7f handicap hurdle for conditional riders under Gingell, who later guided €80,000 purchase Maldini Milano to a successful debut in the bumper.
“He’s a good lad," Nicholls told Racing TV of Gingell. “I’ve known him since he was pony racing with [the trainer’s daughter] Olive and he’s done well.
“He’s progressed nicely, works hard and he obviously rides well. He’s just got to get some experience now.”
Olive Nicholls’ mother, Georgina, also had plenty of praise for Gingell, albeit it was Gavin Sheehan who rode her first jumps winner since June when Chattamento landed the 2m2½f mares’ novice hurdle.
“Freddie’s three weeks older than Olive and it was really fun watching them grow up,” said Georgina Nicholls.
“He’s just developed into a lovely young man with plenty of ability in the saddle. I just love seeing him ride winners like that on Saturday.”
Gingell’s uncle, Joe Tizzard, trained the winner of the opening 2m3f beginners’ chase when Gyenyame, a runner-up over hurdles at Cheltenham’s November meeting on this date last year, scored on his second start over fences under Brendan Powell.
