"This is why you own racehorses" said a delighted Tim Gredley after watching Save A Forest, a filly he owns with the rest of his family, land the Listed Chalice Stakes.

The Roger Varian-trained three-year-old had impressive form in the book for the £54,500 feature having finished fourth to Snowfall in the Oaks last time out.

After narrowly missing out on a first Listed win by less than a length at Lingfield in May, the daughter of Kingman was on the right side of a tight finish this time, staying on from last to first to edge out 13-8 favourite Sayyida by half a length.

Gredley said: "She just has her own way and kind of warms up in a race. She’s absolutely useless at home which I think is quite funny so no one can really get a gauge on her until she gets to the track.

"We want to be competitive in these stakes races. As fun as handicaps are, this is where you want to be so when these horses come round you’ve got to enjoy them.

"I took my daughter and it’s her first time going racing. She’s only a year old so it’s quite nice for her to come down. She’ll probably never come again so to watch a Listed winner, it couldn't get any better really."

Callum Shepherd is retained jockey to the Gredleys and this was a first stakes win for his employers.

Gredley added of Shepherd's long wait: "I was joking to him last night, I said he’d been working for us long enough now it was about time he pulled his finger out and won us some black type on something.

"It’s really nice being in your home town, on the July course on Saturday afternoon, winning a Listed race."
