Jumps owner breaks new ground at the headquarters of Flat racing
As the focus shifts towards the jumps it was fitting that Michael Geoghegan – a Grade 1-winning owner with Paul Nicholls – was on the mark when Treble Tee justified strong market support in the 7f novice.
Supported into 100-30 second favourite from 8-1 in the morning, the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained newcomer travelled like the winner throughout under James Doyle and easily held off the late surge of Mudbir.
The eye was drawn to the runner-up in the paddock beforehand, not least as his groom was leading up in a bow tie, but in the end the son of Kingman was outsmarted to the tune of two and a quarter lengths.
Ed Crisford said: "It's our first winner for Michael and he's a nice horse for the future. We'll put him away for the winter and he'll get a mile in time."
Paddy Power gave the winner an opening quote of 33-1 for next year's Betfred 2,000 Guineas.
Tremendous Tremorgio
Charlie Appleby traditionally does well on this card and was on the mark with the outsider of the pair he fielded in the 1m2f maiden, a race he had previously won with the classy New London.
Arabian Poet was supposed to do the business for the Moulton Paddocks outfit but the 15-8 favourite was left toiling at the Bushes as the white cap of James Doyle swept by on 9-1 newcomer Tremorgio.
The winner had already been gelded and was fitted with cheekpieces for his introduction, in which he accounted for fellow debutant Ivatt.
Appleby said: "Arabian Poet was a bit disappointing but Tremorgio has stepped up and he could be a mile-and-a-half prospect next year given how he finished off."
I Am I Said 40-1 for Derby
The future stayers' novice was won by subsequent Classic winner Hurricane Lane in 2020 and newcomer I Am I Said looked a colt with potential when scoring tidily under Richard Kingscote.
The 20-1 chance was the lesser fancied of two Ralph Beckett-trained runners but you would not have known it by the way he put Byblos and odds-on favourite Present Times to the sword.
Joe Tuite, assistant to Beckett, said: "That was a nice surprise. If they win first time as a general rule they are a bit special."
I Am I Said was given an opening quote of 40-1 by Paddy Power for next year's Derby.
Happy ending
Middleham Park Racing had a tonic after a tricky few days when Ziggy's Phoenix won the only non-juvenile race on the card, the mile fillies' handicap.
The 14-1 chance was not for passing under Sean Levey and her place in next week's horses in training sale is now under review.
Tom Palin, racing manager to the owners, said: "It's been a sad few days with Marie's Rock and Shouldvebeenaring retiring but we have some nice yearlings to look forward to next year and the show rolls on."
Sky high for Keeley
Aidan Keeley made his only ride at his local track a winner when Misty Sky bagged the opener for former Newmarket trainer Hugo Palmer.
The jockey, who is attached to the Roger Varian stable, made the most of an outside ride on the 4-1 chance to hold off newcomer With Zest.
He said: "I rode out my claim a couple of months ago and it's not been easy picking up outside rides but thankfully I'm getting some now."
