Trainer Joseph O'Brien saddled the winner of the Group 3 Denny Cordell Lavarack and Lanwades Stud Fillies Stakes for the second year running as Je Zous powered home at odds of 17-2 under a clever and enterprising ride from Dylan Browne McMonagle.

The three-year old has put in some classy efforts this season, including fifth in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot and she contested the German Oaks on her last start, coming sixth.

This represented a drop in trip and class and Browne McMonagle was keen to make use of his filly's stamina as he sent her into the lead after a couple of furlongs.

As the pair turned for home with a length advantage, the jockey elected to take a detour, steering his mount over to the stands' side while the rest of the field came up the centre of the track.

It proved an inspired manoeuvre as she had soon fought off eventual third Caught U Looking and charged to the line to repel the fast-finishing 9-4 favourite One Look by a length and three-quarters.

O'Brien said: "She's a good filly, her runs are very solid this year and she was dropping down in class today. It's nice to win a Group race with her because she's been very consistent all along.

“I thought it was a very open, competitive Group race beforehand. Her run in Ascot was very good and she deserved to win a Group race. It was a good ride from Dylan. The owners are New Zealand based and she'll be going to Australia at some stage. Whether she has another run here or not on the way, we'll see."

Coen off the mark

Sam Coen guided home his first winner in the mile handicap on the Andy Slattery-trained Rock Etoile with the winner enhancing his strong course record by streaking three lengths clear at odds of 6-1.

The pair met a brief moment of trouble when hampered between horses at the two-furlong marker, but the horse and jockey soon regathered themselves and shot through the gap before going on to win comfortably.

"It's great for Sam to get his first winner,” said Slattery. "He's very good value and he's probably a bit more than a 10lb claimer at the moment. He's tidy and rides well.

“Rock Etoile ran better than the finishing result in Galway last time. He was a bit wide and the race was a bit messy. He's a grand handicapper and it's great to have the likes of him for the apprentices to get them going.”

Lordan double for Ballydoyle

Wayne Lordan rattled off a quick double for Aidan O'Brien in the opening two maidens as Island Hopping thundered home to deny Continuite by a head, while County Mayo got off the mark in impressive style by two and three-quarter lengths in the maiden for colts and geldings.
