James Bethell was on the verge of tears after Artistic Rifles gave his son the biggest win of his new career by making all in the Group 3 Betfair Double Daily Rewards Superior Mile.

He handed the training licence over to Ed at the start of the year and said: "I'm a very proud dad indeed, this is rather emotional. I couldn't be more pleased.

"This is entirely down to him. We got the horse through a contact of Ed's – and I'd have gone for a £50,000 handicap at Doncaster next Saturday!"

Ed Bethell missed seeing Andrea Atzeni secure the 20th winner of his first season as a trainer because he was at a wedding.

"It was a brilliant ride by Andrea," Bethell's father added. "On this firm ground it's hard to make up ground. We'll probably think about Dubai, he loves fast ground."

Brave triumph

Island Brave gave trainer Heather Main her biggest success when landing the £80,000 Betfair Exchange Old Borough Cup under Silvestre de Sousa.

The seven-year-old took his career earnings past £200,000 with a battling half-length win.

"That's a great result," said owner Donald Kerr. "I've had him since he was a breeze-up horse.

"He's been great for me and the yard – Heather has done a fantastic job with him."

The victory is set to come at a cost for De Sousa, who was deemed by the stewards to have been guilty of excessive use of the whip.

As the offence was deemed to warrant a suspension of between two and six days, and given it was his fifth such infringement within the last six months, the matter was referred to BHA headquarters under the totting-up procedures.

Golden return

Golden Flame bounced back from a modest effort at York to make all under Joe Fanning in the £100,000 1m6f handicap.

"It's pretty fast out there," said trainer Mark Johnston's assistant Jock Bennett.

"The first two winners made all, it's suiting the front runners and Joe Fanning is the master of it – though, to be fair to the horse, he looked as though he was the last off the bridle there."

Talented sprinter

Winning a race aboard Mondammej is not the easiest thing to do but Cam Hardie did his job to perfection when guiding the complicated sprinter to a narrow defeat of Copper Knight in the £30,000 Be Friendly Handicap.

"He's a bit of a freak of nature," said Hardie of the Antony Brittain-trained winner.

"I would say he's the quickest horse I've ever sat on but he's also a bit of a thinker. You have to ride him for luck because he pulls up in front.

"He once got beat by an inferior horse in a match race but we also always knew there was a big one in him. When you get the gaps and things fall right for him he definitely has the ability."
