Jack Tudor reroutes from Ffos Las to ride Plumpton winner after champion jockey Harry Cobden is stood down
Jack Tudor began the day expecting to ride David Pipe’s exciting novice hurdler Jurancon at Ffos Los, but instead partnered a winner for the same trainer 250 miles away when helping Lado Balko get off the mark over fences.
Tudor rerouted to East Sussex when Ffos Las’s meeting was abandoned on Monday morning. Lady Balko’s intended rider in the 3m1½f handicap chase Harry Cobden was stood down after his mount, Baltray, fell in the previous race.
The champion jockey walked away from the fall in the 2m4½f handicap hurdle in which Bertie B provided trainer Clive Boultbee-Brooks with his first winner of the season.
Lady Balko was fifth on her chasing debut at Bangor, and Tudor, who steered the mare to a hat-trick over hurdles last season, told Sky Sports Racing: “The trip was a bit short for her that day but she put that run behind her.”
Tudor took over Cobden’s final two rides but was unable to help Sullivan Bay justify 11-8 favouritism in 2m4½f novice handicap hurdle. The Jim and Suzi Best-trained four-year-old was beaten a head by Ask Her Out, who was providing Richenda Ford with her first winner since July.
The Tudor-ridden Kingston Queen then chased home Alan King’s stable debutant Baron Noir in the bumper. King had earlier landed the 2m3½f novice handicap chase with Theonlywayiswessex, both ridden by Tom Cannon.
Julius joy
Julius Des Pictons kicked off a potentially big week for Jamie Snowden and The Footie Partnership when going one better than last month’s British debut second at Uttoxeter.
The €120,000 purchase won the 2m4½f maiden hurdle under Gavin Sheehan, who could ride Ga Law for the same connections in Huntingdon’s Grade 2 Peterborough Chase on Sunday.
Sheehan was denied a double on another odds-on favourite, Fromheretoeternity, who was beaten three-quarters of a length by Confinentic in the 2m novice hurdle.
