'I've never seen a run like that' - Maranoa Charlie solo effort has Australian connections dreaming big

Maranoa Charlie carried a big reputation into the Group 3 Prix Thomas Bryon, although few could have expected the Wootton Bassett colt to dominate in quite such a dismissive manner.

Aurelien Lemaitre opened up a lead in double-digit lengths over the first two furlongs and never looked like relinquishing it, much to the joy of his Australian owners.

"It was unbelievable," said co-owner Peter Maher. "Sometimes when you're watching you're concerned the horse has got away from the jockey but he was just travelling so kindly. When he came into the straight like that it was quite surreal. I've never seen a horse run like that, not one of ours anyway.

"It's difficult to try and work out where the limit may or may not be when they run like that. Most of Australia was watching tonight, he's certainly caused a stir down there."

Trainer Christopher Head added: "I don't think I've ever trained a horse like him, one with his desire to run and who can take the others on like that. He gets better with every run and I don't know what his limits are. The plan is to go to the Criterium International and that was the perfect preparation."

Doha lands Prix Dahlia for Ralph Beckett

The Ralph Beckett-trained Doha once again proved herself Treve's best offspring to date with a cosy success in the Listed 1m2f Prix Dahlia under Christophe Soumillon.

A product of the union between Treve, who won the second of her two Arcs ten years ago this weekend, and Sea The Stars, Doha was last seen chasing home Tamfana in the Atalanta Stakes at Sandown.

"This is massive and a huge pleasure for all the team, especially with Sheikh Joaan here to see her win," said Al Shaqab's representative in France Rupert Pritchard Gordon.

"Treve hasn't had a whole load of luck as a broodmare up until Doha, but it's so difficult when you have a brilliant racemare and they get so few chances to breed a really good one. We're very lucky and hopefully this is just the start."

He added: "She ran with credit in the Nassau Stakes and Ralph has done a great job. We'll discuss with him and Sheikh Joaan to see if she runs again this season, and it's not impossible she'll stay in training at five as she's still improving."

Sparks Fly and Atlantic Coast both score at Listed level

There was further stakes success for the visitors, with Al Shira'aa Racing's homebred Atlantic Coast striking for Joseph O'Brien and Dylan Browne McMonagle in the Listed Prix Matchem, and the Dave Loughnane-trained Sparks Fly scoring in the Listed Prix Coronation under a well-judged ride from Laura Pearson, the pair's second success in tandem at Saint-Cloud.

"She's not had the best of seasons but the ground was wrong for her at the Curragh and we had to take her to the other end of the track because she hangs and we have to do what she wants to do," said Pearson.

"This track suits her down to the ground. She has a lot of ability and a lot of spirit and, as long as we point that in the right direction, she takes us there."
