‘It’s something I’ll continue to do’ - Warren Greatrex eyeing more Flat success after fifth winner from 30 runners
Warren Greatex’s recent venture into Flat racing continued when Gilet landed his fifth winner of the campaign.
The four-time Grade 1-winning trainer has saddled 30 runners on the Flat this year and Gilet, a £25,000 Goffs breeze-up buy in April, gained a first victory at the fourth attempt in the 6f maiden.
Charlie Bishop's mount rallied well in the straight to score by half a length in first-time cheekpieces.
Greatrex told Sky Sports Racing: “Jim and Claire [Bryce, owners] asked in the spring if I would train a few breeze-ups, so they bought 13!
“Tess, my wife, has loved it as it’s something a bit different from buying jumps horses and it's going really well. I’ve really been enjoying it and it’s something I’ll continue to do.”
Greatrex has 50 jumps horses for the winter and 15 for the Flat, although the Lambourn trainer is aiming to add five to ten more Flat horses for next summer.
Second success
Apprentice Jack Dace rode his second winner aboard Youthful King, trained by his father Luke, in the 1m4f handicap.
Dace rode his first winner aboard King Cabo at the same course on turf last month and Youthful King powered clear to win by a length and a quarter.
Double delight
Neil Callan landed the last two races aboard the Richard Spencer-trained Con Te Partiro in the 1m2f handicap and Lady Dreamer for Tom Ward in the 7f fillies' handicap.
