Wednesday: Perth

Jockey Stephen Mulqueen made an incredible recovery when steering Spark Of Madness to victory in the 2m handicap chase at Perth.

In the three-runner race, the Lucinda Russell-trained six-year-old made the early running along with Fabrique En France and there was a coming together between the pair jumping the second, which knocked Spark Of Madness and Mulqueen off balance and very nearly resulted in the rider being unseated.

Mulqueen had to desperately hang on to his mount and appeared to lose control of his irons, only regaining full control after safely jumping the third.

Despite the early drama, the pair went on to record a remarkable victory after fending off Bob's Bar in a thrilling finish, although only after Mulqueen overcame another major scare when Spark Of Madness made a mistake at the last.

Russell said: "Stephen is a fantastic horseman. He said he got his foot stuck behind the saddle and couldn't get it back out.

"I knew he had the ability to get back up, even when the chips were down. I was delighted he got back on and it's a credit to him and to the horse because it is his first novice chase. It's a credit to Stephen for his strength and tenacity to get back into the rhythm.

"He's a very good jockey and very underrated," she added.
