'It's a big ask to go Saturday-Saturday-Saturday in two different countries'

Saturday: Curragh

When Saturday comes. It could have been a song title written with Treasure Trove in mind. The Paddy Twomey-trained filly was in action for the third Saturday in a row, from the Curragh to York and back to the Curragh again.

She seems to be doing nothing but thriving on it, and followed up her victory in last weekend's Roses Stakes at York with a last-stride success in the Group 3 Heider Family Stables Round Tower Stakes.

Billy Lee rode her with plenty of confidence, partly to try to get her to see out the extra furlong, and it was timed to perfection as the daughter of Siyouni picked up in the nick of time and had her nose in front on the line to beat Ocean Quest by a short-head.

Twomey said: "It's a big ask to go Saturday-Saturday-Saturday in two different countries. She was in great form last week and before she got in the truck a few hours later she had polished off two bowls of nuts! So she has the mental attitude for it.

"The owner was texting me wondering about the Flying Childers, which I think is only in ten days. But she's tough and versatile.

"The owners want to keep her going and they were talking last week about the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint. Every time she comes out she seems to be doing better than the time before."

Powell's day

Apprentice Jamie Powell has been quietly making a name for himself this season, and the Kildare town native took a big step forward in his career by landing a 254-1 treble.

Powell found the key to the frustrating Ice Cold In Alex to land the 6f handicap for Ken Condon and Middleham Park Racing.

Having landed a good fillies' handicap here a week earlier on Star Image for Tom and Helen Mullins, he repeated the dose for the same connections on San Aer in the apprentice handicap.

He rounded off the day with a well-judged ride from the front in the nursery on Bossy Parker for Johnny Murtagh, only the second winner for his old boss.

He said: "What a great day. It's great to ride my first treble on my local track. I'm from five minutes down the road and hopefully it's the first of many."

Grove causes a shock

Twice-raced Aspen Grove caused a 66-1 shock in the first of the Group 3 races, the Newtown Anner Stud Irish EBF Stakes, but there appeared no fluke.

She quickened well from the back of the field to beat favourite Shelton by a length and a quarter for trainer Fozzy Stack. It was a first Group winner for rider Mark Enright.

The Group 3 Snow Fairy Fillies Stakes went to the Jessica Harrington-trained Viareggio, ridden by Shane Foley.
