'It was an impressive performance' - Gethin makes powerful impression on his debut for Owen Burrows
The feature 1m½f novice produced a potentially classy prospect in Gethin, who powered six lengths clear of 6-4 favourite Holborn to make a successful debut.
The son of Ghaiyyath cost 150,000gns as a yearling and was a fourth two-year-old winner from 11 juvenile runners this season for trainer Owen Burrows.
“It was an impressive performance,” winning rider Callum Rodriguez told Racing TV. “I was always confident that I was going to win quite well. He just had a wander around when he got to the front but he’s entitled to do that. He’s gone through the line well.”
The £30,000 contest named after 1999 Derby winner Oath, who ended his juvenile campaign with victory in a Nottingham maiden, already has a strong roll of honour.
Last month’s Cambridgeshire winner Liberty Lane made a successful debut in it in 2022, while the ill-fated Going The Distance took this race prior to his Royal Ascot victory in the King George V Stakes.
Rodriguez, who was riding a second winner on his fourth ride for Burrows, added: “He’s gone through that ground well.
“It would be nice to see him in the spring on better ground doing something similar, but he’ll be a nice middle-distance horse. I don’t think he needs to rush up in trip.”
Sly strikes
Pam Sly enjoyed her first winner since May when Wintercrack benefited from an 89-day break and heavy ground to land the closing 1m2f handicap under Shane Kelly.
