Impressive Sir Dragonet looks overpriced for Derby after Chester Vase triumph
In recent years Chester’s May meeting has provided leading pointers towards both the Derby and Oaks, and the opening day was again lit up by the emergence of a couple of serious Classic contenders.
Not since Ruler Of The World in 2013 has the winner of the Chester Vase followed up at Epsom, but there is every chance of that playing out again this season after Sir Dragonet put eight lengths between himself and his rivals.
The colt had only made a winning debut at Tipperary 13 days earlier, and he got taken off his feet on this steep rise in class. However, as the race developed the lightbulb came on and it was obvious as he turned for home on the bridle we would see something impressive. It should also be noted he took an age to pull up under Donnacha O’Brien.
