'I'd hope there's more to come from her. She put it to bed easy today' - Marakesh keeps Henry de Bromhead Flat express going

Marakesh and Billy Lee return after winning the 7f maiden at Gowran Park on Tuesday

It has turned into a vintage Flat season for Henry de Bromhead, especially in the last couple of weeks with the victories of Magical Zoe in the Ebor and Higher Leaves in a Listed contest at Longchamp on Sunday, and the performance of newcomer Marakesh will have set a few tongues wagging after she impressed on her belated debut in the 7f fillies' maiden.

The four-year-old filly by Decorated Knight had refused to load on her intended debut at the Curragh, but she was a lot sweeter here under Billy Lee and, after tracking the leaders most of the way, she produced a telling turn of foot inside the last furlong to see off Joseph O'Brien's pair Supreme Success and Castanets by an easy two and a half lengths.

She has no entries, but De Bromhead will surely be tempted to put her into a stakes race after this performance.

Lee said: "The last day was a blip when she didn't go in. Here she was good and straightforward. She travelled well and got me into a lovely position. Up the straight I was just waiting for a gap to open and when it did she picked up well and galloped out to the line well.

"I'd hope there is more to come from her. She put it to bed easy today after running green and having a good look. Stepping up to a mile should bring more improvement."

Murtagh on the double

Johnny Murtagh and Ben Coen combined for a double, the highlight of which was the performance of the once-raced Greatest Drama in a decent fillies' maiden which opened the card. The daughter of Night Of Thunder fought out a good finish with the Ballydoyle favourite Mint Candy and showed a good attitude to score by a nose.

"She worked well during the week, so we thought coming here she had a chance," said Murtagh. "She was after having a good run against the colts and that looked a very good race, so we were coming here with a bit of confidence.

"Ben said she’s still a bit green, is still learning on the job and hopefully there is a bit more to come. I’ll have a chat with the owners and she should be able to do one more this year."

The double came in the fillies' claimer when Glen Princess bolted up in a first-time headgear combination. When horses win a claimer in this fashion, there must be some regret about running them in such a race, but Murtagh said: "I spoke to the owner this morning and she is here to be claimed. She has won two for us now, and I'm sure that somebody will take a chance."

However, no claims were lodged, which may prove a blessing in disguise.
