'I thought today might be the day' - amateur Megan Davies celebrates first winner on Ayr Poet
Megan Davies enjoyed her landmark first winner in the saddle when steering Ayr Poet to victory in the opening mile handicap for amateur jockeys.
Davies, who is from Irvine in Ayrshire, got off the mark on her seventh career ride when guiding the nine-year-old to success by a length and three quarters for her boss Jim Goldie.
She told Racing TV: "He was super and took me the full way. I just sat there and he did his job. I thought coming to the two-furlong pole that he's travelling very well and then I thought today might be the day for that first winner.
"Jim said let him jump and sit handy and if not, don't panic and he'd be good for me. There's no racing in my family at all and I'm continuing as an amateur as I'm a bit heavy for an apprentice licence, but Jim's been so generous in helping young people like me progress."
Goldie doubled up when Rock Melody caused a 20-1 surprise with a repeat success in the feature 7f fillies' handicap.
The five-year-old weaved her way through the field under Amie Waugh to successfully defend her title and complete the trainer's 83-1 haul.
Double delivered
Reel Her In made it two wins from as many starts at the track with victory in the 2m handicap under Paul Mulrennan.
Mulrennan completed a double when Sixcor bounced back to his best with another course-and-distance success in the concluding 5f handicap.
