On the day Franny Norton retired, Greg Cheyne enhanced his Roodee record with an opportune success aboard Marama in the 1m2½f novice.

While he will have to go some to match Norton's extraordinary efforts at the track, the South African rider made it two wins from as many rides at the course with a straightforward success aboard the three-year-old, who is trained by his boss William Haggas.

"I'm two from two at the track and it's good to back," Cheyne, 48, said. "I've been with William just over two years now, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it and learning all the time. Although rides have dried up a bit, I'm doing what I want to do right now. Getting the opportunity from the boss is great.

"We've got jockeys elsewhere today and this filly was available, and I really appreciate the opportunity. She showed a lot of promise last year, and she's had the benefit of nine months of furnishing and patience has been rewarded. She's really put them to bed and her turn of foot was what impressed me most."

By charging seven lengths clear of the 4-5 favourite Burrito, Marama was getting her career back on track after unseating Cieren Fallon in the Listed Montrose Stakes at Newmarket in November.

Haggas went on to record a double when teaming up with Norton to land the 6f novice with the 1-3 favourite Raneenn.
