Joint-trainer William Muir always kept faith in Caramay but said her recent winning form has come as a pleasant surprise.

The five-year-old chalked up a fifth win from eight starts since September, and her second success this month, when landing the 1m3f handicap under apprentice Joe Leavy.

Caramay had only registered one victory in 13 starts before September and was rated as low as 47, but her half-length defeat of Kinetic off a mark of 72 left Muir, who trains alongside Chris Grassick in Lambourn, singing her praise.

He said: "She got beat a nose at Wolverhampton in September 2023 and she was off a very light mark, and I thought we’d lost our chance, but I told the owner we’ll let her get stronger because the family does with age.

"I knew she’d win races, but I can’t quite believe it. She’s gone from being a filly with the least amount of ability in the yard who tried, to becoming unbelievable. I’m absolutely delighted with her. She was fresh and well and I just hope we haven’t gone to the well once too many times too quickly."

He added: "We dropped her back in trip at Wolverhampton and she zoomed in, but today she looks like she may want even further. She’s very versatile and as long as we keep her happy then we’ll keep tipping away to see how long she goes for."

Drought over

Brian Ellison registered his first Flat winner since October when Letmeseethecolts struck in division two of the 1m3f classified stakes.

Ellison, who trained a jumps winner at Sedgefield on Boxing Day, last triumphed in this code with Hardy Bloke at Nottingham on October 24.
