Hayley Turner made the long trip to Gosforth Park worthwhile when her sole ride on the card, Storm Star, landed the feature mile handicap.

The Andrew Balding-trained four-year-old, owned by Jeff Smith, travelled strongly throughout before powering to the front in the final furlong to score by three-quarters of a length from Apiarist.

"I've not been a regular here, but I've been up a few times this winter and it's either for David Simcock or Andrew, so they sort of have a chance whenever I do," Turner told Sky Sports Racing.

"He's a strong traveller, but he tends to hit a flat spot mid-race, whereas today he just took me into it without me feeling like I was ever going to get beaten on him – I struggled to pull him up as well!

"Once he's in this form, I don't think the track makes a difference, he'd have won wherever to be honest. It's nice to have a winner for Andrew and Mr Smith."

Five up for Caltonian

The Caltonian came from near last to first under a fine ride from Kieran O'Neill to secure his fifth success at Newcastle in the 6f handicap.

The six-year-old, who was winning off a mark of 88 having started his rise through the ranks with victory off 55 here in October 2023, rattled down the middle of the track and proved a length too good for We Never Stop.

Miraculous gets up late

Roger Varian was out of luck with Qazaq, who lost his unbeaten record when only sixth behind Storm Star, but he struck with his other runner on the card when Miraculous got up on the line in the 6f novice.
