'I feel like a surfer riding a giant wave' - Murphy's magnificent run continues
Mike Murphy hailed his recent success as "unbelievable" as the trainer continued a sensational run of form by watching his only two runners of the day, Owhatanight and Mulzim, both complete hat-tricks.
Murphy's strike-rate for the year now stands at a remarkable 50 per cent after he brought up his 14th and 15th winners from only 30 runners.
Owhatanight's treble has come in the space of ten days, the 4-9 favourite following up recent successes here and at Kempton with a three-quarter-length victory in the 6f handicap.
The progressive Mulzim, taking a step up in grade after two course-and-distance wins, then swept aside the opposition in the 5f handicap to complete the double for Murphy and rider Daniel Muscutt.
Murphy, who has now trained four hat-trick winners in 2021, said: "It's unbelievable really, but it's a testament to the hard work of all the staff at home because each of the four horses that have had the hat-tricks all had issues to overcome.
"I feel like one of those surfers on the Californian coast in riding a giant wave. We keep thinking we're going to get wiped out at some stage. The next step is to roll this over on to the turf season."
Joy for Carsons
The Carson family were celebrating at the close of the day's action when ten-year-old veteran Gulland Rock won for the first time in almost three years in the mile classified stakes.
Gulland Rock, trained by Anthony Carson and ridden by his son William, had rarely threatened the winner's enclosure since his last victory in May 2018, but the 5-1 shot bounced back from a disappointing run over course and distance last Friday to record a ninth victory on his 83rd career start.
