'I don't know why they write him off' - 50-1 Runninwild causes another big shock
Ann Duffield was left bemused as to why her Runninwild was allowed to drift to a huge starting price of 50-1 before landing the 6f handicap under Shane Gray.
The three-year-old had only beaten one rival in three starts since baffling punters by winning at 200-1 at Redcar in May but bounced back to form in style.
Duffield said: "I don't know why they write him off on the telly. They talked about every horse bar him. He is a little bit dopey, it does take him a long time to pick the idea up, but he has always been able to gallop. We weren't surprised when he won at 200-1 and I'm not surprised he won today."
"He doesn't like soft ground. Today was nice for him and it worked out and Shane [Gray] is riding at the top of his game."
Gray justified the plaudits of long-time supporter Duffield as he completed a 356-1 double, having already steered David O'Meara's Arranmore (6-1) to victory in the mile handicap.
Meanwhile Duffield, who has doubled her tally for the season to eight winners in the past fortnight, was pleased to reward the winning owners, which include Ian Farrington.
She said: "They're real supporters. They never let a horse of theirs go without a bit of money on. They backed him a little bit when he won at 200-1, so they'll have had something on, I'm sure!"
Perfect news pounces
While William Haggas's attention may have been diverted to York, his sole representative in Cumbria got the job done and made jockey Cieren Fallon's five-hour journey from Newmarket worthwhile.
Perfect News, who holds big-race entries in next month's Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes and the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes, was always doing enough to win by half a length on her second start in division two of the 6f fillies' maiden.
Trainer Alistair Whillans signed off his training career in style as he took the 1m1f handicap for amateur jockeys with 18-1 outsider Zealous, ridden by Luke Scott.
Whillans will be handing over to his son and former jockey Ewan, who had been acting as assistant to his father. Ewan has his first runners at Stratford on Thursday.
