'He's the lord of the manor' - veteran Sir Chauvelin stuns with long-awaited win
Friday: Newcastle
Sir Chauvelin had failed to beat a single horse since June last year but proved he is no back number when storming from last to first in the 1m4½f handicap in a training masterclass by Jim Goldie.
The nine-year-old finished last in his previous five starts but bounced right back to form to strike at 25-1 under Paul Mulrennan.
"I'm chuffed to bits with him," Goldie said. "It was poetry in motion and impressive for him. You might call him an improving nine-year-old.
"He's had problems and there's a debt to the vets and the patience of everyone involved to get him back.
"There's pressure on to retire horses like that but he's not one who would be a happy hacker. We've had him a long time and we know all his quirks. He's the lord of the manor."
A full brother to Euchen Glen, Sir Chauvelin's ability was never in question for Goldie, who also sent out Northumberland Plate winner Nicholas T to finish seventh in the following race.
"Nicholas T won the Plate as a nine-year-old, so if we could win it with a ten-year-old that would be something for the history books," the trainer added.
King of Newcastle
King Of The South continued his flying form at the track to land his fourth Newcastle win in the feature 1m4½f handicap under Tom Marquand.
The William Knight-trained four-year-old has yet to finish outside the first three in six starts at the course and formed the first leg of a double for Marquand, who later struck on the William Haggas-trained Tarroob in the 1m2f handicap.
