'He's so dearly missed' - Sam Twiston-Davies pays tribute to Liam Treadwell
Sam Twiston-Davies paid tribute to his friend Liam Treadwell after winning the 2m4f novice chase on an emotional raceday dedicated to the memory of the Grand National-winning jockey.
Worcester's seven-race card commemorated Treadwell exactly a year on from his tragic death at the age of 34 and featured unique race titles to mark the rider's best horses and favourite pastimes.
Many of Treadwell’s former colleagues and friends were at the track, including the recently retired four-time champion jockey Richard Johnson.
Twiston-Davies was speaking after steering the Richard Newland-trained Captain Tom Cat to a wide-margin success in the 2m4f In Memory Of Liam Treadwell Novices' Chase to make it 3-3 over fences.
He said: “To have a day and then to ride a winner on his day means so much. It means something to all of us.
“You would never see someone have a cross word about Liam. That just shows how good a jockey, how good a horseman and how good a work rider he was.
“You’d hang off his every word and he's so dearly missed. The memories will live on incredibly fondly with all of us.”
On the scoresheet
Robert Walford enjoyed his first winner of the season as Elios D’Or proved punters’ judgement right when winning by 11 lengths in the 2m handicap chase.
The 11-4 favourite had been a consistent performer for Walford this term, finishing third on his last three starts, and was ridden for the first time by Bryan Carver.
The Dorset trainer joked: “We don’t usually have a winner until November so it’s nice to have one a bit early!
“He’s our only horse we’ve got in for the summer. It’s the first winner Tony Lewis, who owns half of the horse, has ever had so it’s really good for him.”
