'He's got a decent head on him' - Sean Dylan Bowen hits the apprentice title summit after Chester double

Sean Dylan Bowen overtook Joe Leavy in the battle for the apprentice title with a cool last-to-first ride aboard Corsican Caper in the 2m handicap.

Bowen did not panic as his mount broke slowly from the stalls and allowed him to find his feet in the early stages before negotiating a passage through runners when travelling strongly on the home bend.

He opted to switch the four-year-old to the outside of the favourite Judgementofsolomon in the closing stages and delivered him with a perfectly timed challenge to score by a length.

The 18-year-old struck earlier on the card with Bob Mali in division two of the 6f novice and is now one ahead of Leavy on 31 wins, with just over five weeks to go until the championship is decided. Corsican Caper's trainer Kevin Frost believes his latest victory was the result of pre-race research.

"He's a confident young lad and he's got a decent head on him," Frost said. "He'd seen all of his races and it makes a big difference when they put themselves out there like that."

On future plans for the 11-2 winner, the trainer said: "He loves this type of ground, so he'll probably keep going through the autumn. He's not hard on himself and hopefully there's a bit of improvement in him. He'll cope with a bigger track as well and anything from a mile-six to two miles will suit him."

Berkshire Sundance, who was sent off the second favourite, fell in the stalls but was deemed a runner. Both the horse and his rider Jason Watson emerged unscathed.

Watson won the following 1m6½f handicap aboard Who's Glen to complete a double, having landed the first division of the 6f novice on Qetaifan.
