'He's fantastic to have on your side' - high praise for Paul Mulrennan after jockey rides second treble in a week
Paul Mulrennan rode three winners on his last visit to Gosforth Park and he made it back-to-back trebles at the venue.
The jockey got the ball rolling on the Jim Goldie-trained Humble Spark, who comfortably justified odds-on favouritism in the 1m4½f handicap.
Annandale quickened up well to lead inside the final furlong in the 1m2f handicap to bring up doubles for Goldie and Mulrennan, who later steered William Dewhirst to victory in the 7f handicap for Ben Haslam.
"He [Mulrennan] was apprentice to my father over 20 years ago and he's been a phenomenal jockey," Haslam told Sky Sports Racing. "He's very, very experienced, very cool-headed and is just fantastic to have on your side."
Hardie hits target
Mondammej continued his resurgence when striking for the third time in five starts in the 5f handicap.
The eight-year-old had gone 40 starts without success since winning off a mark of 97 in November 2021 but has bounced right back to form since having wind surgery in October.
Held up in last, Mondammej scythed his way through the field and found plenty under regular rider Cam Hardie, who has ridden him on all but one of his 65 starts, to win by a comfortable two and a half lengths from Strong Johnson.
Ruler reigns supreme
Northern Ruler made a winning stable debut for Karl Burke in the 1m4½f novice under Clifford Lee, who was completing a double having taken the opening 5f handicap on Oakley Boy for Stuart Williams.
