'He's coming of age' - pure joy for Rossa Ryan and his proud parents as Arc victory crowns rapid rise
There's always plenty of glory to be shared around after the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe but much of it belongs on this occasion to Rossa Ryan. The 24-year-old jockey is a rising star but still enough of a hardworking professional that, on the eve of the most important ride of his life so far, he was keeping busy 530 miles north of here at Redcar.
It is one of several indicators that Ryan is not the type to get carried away with himself. While obviously deliriously thrilled in the moments after crossing the line a length and a quarter clear in Europe's most prestigious race, he was composure itself by the time of the post-race discussion and deflected praise away from himself.
"All credit to the two men beside me," he said, in reference to trainer Ralph Beckett and Barry Mahon of Juddmonte, now the most successful owner in Arc history. "I've just been the lucky one to be on her but there's a lot more people involved who've done more work than I have."
