'He was always going to tough it out. He's a good horse' - Harrington ace too hot for his rivals

Hotazhell produced a really tough performance to land the Group 2 Beresford Stakes and provide Jessica Harrington with her second victory in the race after Curtain Call scored in 2007.

The son of Too Darn Hot was winning for the third time in five starts, although victory looked unlikely when he came off the bridle and almost appeared to be the first beaten early in the straight. However, the further they went the better he responded to the urgings of Shane Foley and at the line he was three-quarters of a length clear of Tennessee Stud, with British challenger Windlord in third.

Hotazhell has thrived on quite a busy schedule, which is not over yet as the plan is to go to Doncaster for the Futurity Trophy next month. Harrington said: "He travels and then he comes off it, and then when he came back on it again he was always going to tough it out. He's a good horse.

"The plan is to go to the Futurity, we might as well as he gets the mile really well. I'm really delighted for the owners, the Silverton Hill Partnership, who had Pathfork with me and gave me my first Group 1 winner in 2010."

O'Brien dominates Million

Joseph O'Brien won most of the considerable prize-money on offer in the Goffs Million, saddling three of the first four with an enterprising and aggressive ride from Dylan Browne McMonagle paying dividends on recent Deauville winner Apples And Bananas.

The jockey made all on the son of Wootton Bassett, who showed a terrific attitude when it was needed as he saw off the challenge of the Ballydoyle favourite Antelope Canyon inside the last furlong to score by a head. The yard also supplied the third home in Celtic Motif, who was three lengths behind the runner-up, and the fourth Valencia.

O'Brien said: "They all ran fantastic but the winner is a very tough horse. Dylan gave him an aggressive ride and he stayed on well. He's obviously better over a mile. It's a great pot to win and fair play to Goffs. It's a great incentive to buy horses at the yearling sale next week.

"The winner had the form in the book. I see him next year as a horse who will go a mile and two furlongs. There's some stamina in his pedigree – he's from an Aga Khan family. For this season we'll have a look at one of the races at Saint-Cloud, he's also in the Futurity at Doncaster. He'll be aimed at one of those."

Lynam still has the knack

Eddie Lynam has been showing with the much-improved Keke this summer that he still has the magic touch with sprinters. A hat-trick in sprint handicaps followed by a close fourth in the Bold Lad here two weeks ago led to the son of Dandy Man going up 15lb in the weights.

However, the four-year-old showed in the Joe McGrath Premier Handicap that there was even more improvement in him. As usual, he had to rely on a bit of luck in running, but Billy Lee got the gaps when he needed them and the horse powered clear inside the last furlong to score by three and three-quarter lengths from 2023 runner-up Harry's Hill and the luckless filly Greek Flower.

"He's just kept coming forward all season and to win four handicaps in a year is pretty cool. I would say he'll go on his holidays now. The handicapper will have his say, so we'll come back for the good sprint handicaps next year. When he came to us as a two-year-old he couldn't run a message. But he gradually improved and won his maiden last year. I told the owner to hold onto him and thankfully he did."
