Clay Regazzoni gamely held on for a half-length success in the 1m1f handicap to secure a third win of the season under Sam James for trainer Keith Dalgleish.

Reacting to another gritty win, Mike Prince, director of Middleham Park Racing, said: "We thought this was a slightly warmer race than he’s been running in recently. There were quite a few in-form horses in the race, but Sam gave him a good ride."

Prince added: "He managed to sustain that run into the back straight and get him to the front eventually. I then thought he might get swallowed up in the straight, but he showed a very good attitude in the last couple of furlongs and we weren’t really worried after that."

James completed a double when steering Grant Tuer’s 2-1 favourite Emaraty Hero to a comfortable success in the 1m4½f handicap.

Riches’s relief

John Riches enjoyed an encouraging day at the office when Rain Cap finally got off the mark at the 12th time of asking for the Lancashire trainer in the first division of the 7f classified stakes.

Speaking after only his third winner of the season, Riches said: "When I bought him from Mick Channon’s he wouldn’t go forward, so I just thought I'd let him get over that season and calm him down. When he first came he was a little bit fizzy, so I just took my time with him.

"He came second last time out on ground he doesn’t really like, but it was good ground today and the visor seems to have worked."

First for Watson

Jason Watson had not ridden at Musselburgh before Friday’s meeting, but he struck on only his fifth ride at the track when Zwift landed the 5f handicap to continue the jockey's blossoming relationship with trainer David O’Meara.
