Locally born Hayley Turner reached the landmark of 100 winners at her home track when the David Simcock-trained Caledonian landed a gamble in the 7f nursery.

The former champion apprentice, who reached the milestone of 1,000 career wins at Chelmsford last December, came from well off the pace to defy Hot To Dot and the trailblazing favourite Qaseem.

The juvenile was winning at the fourth attempt and was sent off at 13-2, having been as big as 12-1 in the morning.

Mark Clayton, director at Southwell, presented Turner with a saddlecloth marked 100 and said it was "thoroughly deserved".

Shoemark extends Gosden run

Kieran Shoemark rode his fourth consecutive winner for John and Thady Gosden when Jane Temple stormed up the stands' rail to land the 1m4f maiden.

The 6-5 favourite kicked off the home bend to reel in long-time leader Steel Tiger before holding the late flourish of market rival At No Time.

Shoemark had won a £25,000 feature at the Nottinghamshire track last Saturday on Sardinian Warrior before landing further wins for the Gosdens at Kempton on Monday and Wednesday.

Jane Temple was enhancing her paddock value at the second attempt as she is from the family of 2,000 Guineas winner Footstepsinthesand.

Thady Gosden said: "Jane Temple is improving with her racing and enjoyed the step up to a mile and a half."

First for Smith

Harry Smith registered his first winner at the seventh attempt when dead-heating on the gambled-on Fortunate Star in a remarkable three-way photo-finish to the opening 5f amateur jockeys' handicap.

Attached to the yard of winning trainer Declan Carroll, Smith forced the head of the 9-4 favourite up on the line to share the spoils with Sirius White, ridden by Ellie Mayo.

The judge took a while to study the photo-finish print as the third-placed Better was only a nose further adrift of the winning pair.
