Frankel gets in on the act as son Chaldean earns 20-1 quote for 2,000 Guineas
Wednesday: York
He was never going to be forgotten on day one of the Ebor festival ten years after demolishing his rivals in the Juddmonte International, and Frankel duly issued a reminder of his potency even before Baaeed emulated Sir Henry Cecil's superstar on his own step up in trip.
Frankel, who won the feature event by seven lengths here in 2012, is also a hit at stud, and his son Chaldean earned a 20-1 quote for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas after success in the Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes.
He carried the same pink and green silks as Frankel, and Juddmonte racing manager Barry Mahon said: "It's a special day. It's ten years since Frankel won the International here and he's leaving his mark on the racetrack every week that goes by. It's lovely to have one in the Juddmonte colours."
Frankel rarely had to battle but it was toughness that marked Chaldean's hard-fought half-length win under Ryan Moore.
"He's a lovely horse," Mahon said. "He's very straightforward and did it well, he was gutsy. He kept finding and Ryan feels like he'll step up to a mile. We'll get him home, see what's available and make a plan."
There could be more to come from the winner, who was a 550,000gns buy, as Mahon said: "He's a mid-May foal, so he's quite a young horse and I'd imagine he has more developing and growing to do. We won't overrace him this year.
"The Guineas is possible, he'll have no problem staying a mile – he could even get a little further next year. Quite rarely he's a purchase by Juddmonte, the Abdullah family bought him as a foal and he's repaying them now."
Blinkers suit Bergerac
Bergerac could bid to enhance Kevin Ryan's fine Ayr Gold Cup record next month after he thrived in the blinkers once again with a short-head victory under Tom Eaves in the opening 5½f handicap.
The Angie Bailey-owned four-year-old was cut to 16-1 (from 25) with Betfair and Paddy Power for the Ayr showpiece, which Ryan has won five times, including in 2016 with the popular Bailey-owned performer Brando.
"It's great to get off to a start like that, he left everything out there and this is what it's all about," the trainer said.
"He's had blinkers on for his last two starts and they really seem to make him concentrate. Neil Callan thought he was saving a bit for himself, but he's improved for them, so we have to thank Neil for it."
