Four jockeys given ten-day bans after 28-1 outsider is gifted 40-length lead in remarkable Lingfield race
Four apprentice jockeys have been banned for ten days each after allowing 28-1 outsider Certain Style to win unchallenged by 22 lengths in a race at Lingfield on Tuesday.
Certain Style, partnered by Tyrese Cameron in the 2m handicap for apprentices who had ridden fewer than ten winners, was sent to the lead early and steadily drew further and further clear.
According to the Racing Post's in-running comments, Certain Style was 40 lengths clear with six furlongs remaining and cantered to a simple victory with the remaining four runners covered by less than a length crossing the finishing line.
The beaten apprentices – Kyle McHugh, Mason Paetel, Warren Fentiman and Chloe Lyons – were interviewed by the stewards and found not to have taken all reasonable measures to obtain the best possible placing.
How the race unfolded
Explaining the decision, chief steward Fergus Sweeney told Sky Sports Racing: "We got all the jockeys in and listened to their evidence. We deliberated as normal and found the four jockeys in breach of not taking all reasonable measures to obtain the best placing and they all got ten days.
"We went in at the entry point because they're inexperienced riders and this is an apprentice race and they're here to learn. [Jockey coach] George Baker is here today talking to them individually through the race to tell them what they should have done. They all held their hands up and said they made a mistake."
Cameron, who was one of only two riders in the race to have ridden a winner, was also cautioned by stewards for initially entering the wrong stall on Certain Style.
The rides of the beaten apprentices were criticised by Ian Mongan, the Group 1-winning rider who is the husband and assistant of winning trainer Laura Mongan.
"I said to Tyrese if there was no pace to let her bowl along, but it was pretty diabolical from the riders in behind," Mongan said. "I don't remember those things happening in my day, but there you go."
The in-running comment
Took keen hold, raced in second, led after 2f, soon clear, went further clear after 4f, 40 lengths ahead 6f out, stayed on from 2f out, unchallenged
Outsiders to the fore
Epsom Faithfull was stepping up in trip to 1m2f for the first time when winning at 100-1 for trainer Pat Phelan and jockey Paddy Bradley, while Isobelle Chalmers rode her first winner when taking the 7f handicap for trainer Dominic Ffrench Davis on 125-1 shot Ashford Hill.
