Field Of Gold promises plenty in Solario as Oisin Murphy squeezes in Irish wedding between Sandown winners
There was an obvious question to ask John Gosden following the Sky Bet Solario Stakes. Within his answer was a line every bit as revealing as Field Of Gold's big-race success.
It might not have felt like a Saturday at Sandown but the afternoon's star performer is a proper Saturday horse, albeit one whose next outing seems likely to come on a Sunday in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. He will head to Paris having become Gosden's seventh winner of a prize his trainer used as a stepping stone for Raven's Pass, Field Of Gold's sire Kingman and Too Darn Hot. It was therefore natural for an inquisitive soul to wonder if Gosden believes Juddmonte's strapping grey has the potential to go on from the Solario in a manner similar to that stellar trio.
"There were a few who didn't go on," replied Gosden, introducing a perfectly fair note of caution. Nobody now remembers Foss Way or Windsor Knot, while Reach For The Moon failed to win another race on the Flat and then managed only fourth when switching codes at Sedgefield. The one-time Classic aspirant did break his jumping duck in July, but nobody was talking about a Worcester maiden hurdle in the moments following his Solario triumph.
