Faleh Bughenaim rides 'special' first winner in Britain on Solar Aclaim for Wathnan Racing
Qatari-born rider Faleh Bughenaim rode his first winner in Britain when helping Solar Aclaim land the 6f handicap.
The three-year-old had been Bughenaim’s first thoroughbred mount in Britain when finishing fifth at Epsom last month and provided him with a breakthrough domestic winner on only his seventh ride.
Bughenaim, successful in Arab races and as part of Al Shaqab's endurance team, rode Jeff Koons to win the Qatar Derby for Solar Aclaim’s trainer Hamad Al Jehani and owners Wathnan Racing last December before relocating to Britain.
After a landmark success on the 16-1 shot, Bughenaim told Racing TV: “I won a nice race in Saudi and I won the Derby in Qatar but it’s special to have a first winner in the UK. I know it’s a handicap, but it’s a really nice winner.
“Goodwood is one of the most beautiful tracks in the world and to have a winner here is great.”
Novus nails it
Novus was beaten a short head in Listed company at this track in May but Gary and Josh Moore’s filly was on the right side of the same winning margin this time around in the Foundation Stakes.
The Rhys Clutterbuck-ridden four-year-old, who had contested Group races on her last three starts, benefited from the return to Listed level and just prevailed over George Boughey’s stable debutant Botanical.
Tuer takes feature prize
Grant Tuer enjoyed a valuable first winner at the track when Love Talk, last seen finishing fourth behind Simmering in a Deauville Group 2, landed the £100,000 series final for juvenile fillies.
Repeat result
Rhoscolyn repeated last year’s success in the mile handicap, scoring off a 3lb higher mark for David O’Meara and Danny Tudhope.
