Emmet McNamara: from pony racing to an Epsom Derby masterclass
Emmet McNamara could hardly have chosen a more opportune time to land his first winner since October as he was rewarded for his enterprising ride with a breakthrough top-level success in the Derby.
The 30-year-old, who was having his first start in the Classic, is the son of trainer Eric McNamara and, like most top Irish riders, cut his teeth on the pony racing circuit, where he was twice champion.
"When you're pony racing and you're coming up you always dream of these races and you think they'll be possible," said McNamara.
